The Makers' Space is situated on the ground floor of the barn building, with areas designed to be more utilitarian, intended for workshop-style craft or creative studio use.

Floor space on this level is currently arranged as three separate work zones, interconnected by sliding doors.  Ample power is supplied to all areas, with fluorescent light and electric heating.  Grid power across the whole site has been upgraded to 3-phase which satisfies any demanding power requirements for working within individual spaces.

During the pandemic, improvement works have been progressing in readiness for reopening, with upgrading of floors, ceilings, wiring and lighting having already been completed.

New smooth concrete floors have been laid to provide a good base and stability for equipment.  Brickwork on internal walls has been made good, and is ready for painting, with any original flint and brick walls restored to their natural state.

The chimney structure located at one end of the barn has been restored to working condition with the potential to house a small forge.

Studio space is arranged into three separate work zones, with each zone interconnected by recently installed sliding doors running on new ironwork hangers.

With upgraded wiring looms in place throughout, ceilings have been replaced, ready for painting.  Ample double power sockets are available in all areas, with a choice of either general overhead fluorescent lighting, or adjustable led spots for localised illumination.

A folding staircase has been installed at one end of the barn to allow access to the upper digital studio, with plans to make this a permanent feature to avoid having to use the external staircase in bad weather.

Flexibility of use is a key strategic goal, right across The Loom's buildings and infrastructure.  The ability to multi-function in the use of the various spaces opens up the potential to stage pop-up events, or have certain activities moving around, according to the needs of those wishing to come and work.

For example, banks of adjustable led spotlights have been installed in all of the lower barn spaces in addition to fluorescent floodlighting.  This allows all three areas to be reconfigured in a gallery format for the occasional exhibition of works.
